Rahul accepts defeat, congratulates Modi

Accepting defeat, the President of Indian National Congress (INC) – Rahul Gandhi has congratulated the Prime Minister of India – Narendra Modi, for his thumping victory in the General Elections 2019.

He also said that INC will continue to fight the battle of ideologies with the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). In addition, he is also considering resigning from the position of INC President. Addressing the media in a Press Conference at INC’s headquarters, he mentioned that Congress Working Committee will meet soon and decide on whether he should resign from the position of INC President.

Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “I accept the verdict of the people of India. Congratulations to the winners, Mr Modi & the NDA. Thank you to the people of Wayanad for electing me as your MP. Thank you also to the people of Amethi. Thank you Congress, workers & leaders, for your hard work in this campaign.”

While Rahul Gandhi registered a win at Wayanad, he was defeated by Smriti Irani in Amethi for the first time. He has won 3 consecutive terms from Amethi since 2004.

Modi crushed opponents in Varanasi

Besides, Narendra Modi contesting from Varanasi, defeated his nearest rival Shalini Yadav of Samajwadi Party (SP) by 4.80 lakh votes. While Prime Minister Modi got 6,74,664 votes, Shalini Yadav got 1,95,159 votes. Congress candidate Ajay Rai secured 3rd position with 1,52,548 votes. In 2014, Modi had won from Varanasi by a margin of 3,71,784 votes against his nearest rival, from Aam Admi Party – Arvind Kejariwal.

BJP’s victory in other States

The BJP has gained huge lead in all the 7 seats in Delhi. In Bhopal, BJP leader – Pragya Thakur defeated Congress by a huge margin. For the records, Pragya Thakur is accused of plotting a bomb attack on Muslims in 2006, in which 6 people were killed.

At about 9:00 p.m., the scores stand at 300 for BJP and 51 for INC

The Prime Minister of Pakistan – Imran Khan said, “I congratulate Prime Minister Modi on the electoral victory of BJP and allies. Look forward to working with him for peace, progress and prosperity in South Asia.”

The Prime Minister of Sri Lanka – Ranil Wickremesinghe tweeted, “Congratulations to @narendramodi on a magnificent victory! We look forward to working closely with you.”

The Prime Minister of Israel – Benjamin Netanyahu wrote, “Congratulations, my friend @Narendramodi, on your impressive election victory! The election results further reaffirm your leadership of the world’s largest democracy. Together we will continue to strengthen the great friendship between India & Israel. Well done, my friend!”

Congratulatory messages from opposition leaders

The Chief Minister of Delhi – Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, “I congratulate Sh Narendra Modi for this historic win and look forward to working together for the betterment of the people of Delhi.”

Former Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir – Omar Abdullah said, “So the exit polls were correct. All that’s left is to congratulate the BJP & NDA for a stellar performance. Credit where credit is due PM Modi Sahib & Mr Amit Shah put together a winning alliance & a very professional campaign. Bring on the next five years.”

The Chief Minister of West Bengal – Mamata Banerjee tweeted, “Congratulations to the winners. But all losers are not losers. We have to do a complete review and then we will share our views with you all. Let the counting process be completed fully and the VVPATs matched.”
