Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti arrested

As Mehbooba cries foul, she has been arrested along with Sajjad Lone and Omar Abdullah

The Former Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir – Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah, who were under house arrest since yesterday evening, have now been arrested today late evening, i.e., August 5, 2019. Apart from these, the leaders of Jammu & Kashmir People’s Conference Party – Sajjad Lone and Imran Ansari have also been arrested.

Mehbooba Mufti has been moved from her home in Srinagar to a nearby Government guest house. The repealing of Articles 370 and 35A has resulted into numerous tweets from these 2 leaders.

According to a notice issued by Executive Magistrate of Srinagar to Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party, she was arrested ensure there is no breach of peace in Jammu & Kashmir.

The notice read, “Therefore, keeping into consideration the aforementioned facts and circumstance, I as executive magistrate first class do hereby immediately order your detention for preventing law and order situation and further as a preventive measure you be shifted to Hari Niwas place till further orders/”

According to the resolution moved by the Home Minister of India – Amit Shah, Article 370 ceases to be operative from Monday, i.e., August 5, 2019 itself. The resolution stated, “The president on the recommendation of Parliament is pleased to declare as from 5th of August 2019, all clauses of the said Article 370 shall cease to be operative.”

Omar Abdullah has already hinted at moving Court against the repealing of the Articles. Post the announcement of repealing of the Articles by Amit Shah, the Former Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir said, “The scrapping of Articles 370 and 35A raise fundamental questions on the State’s accession because that was done on the very terms enunciated in these Articles. The decisions are unilateral, illegal and unconstitutional and will be challenged as such by the National Conference. A long and tough battle lies ahead.”

Here are the tweets from Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah

Tweet: The overwhelming mandate that Modi ji got had given us hope that like a statesman he too would tread the path taken by Vajpayee ji & reach out to people of J&K. What an utter betrayal of trust.

Tweet: Today the people of Jammu & Kashmir who reposed their faith in institutions of India like parliament & Supreme Court feel defeated & betrayed. By dismembering the state & fraudulently taking away what is rightfully & legally ours, they have further complicated the Kashmir dispute.

Tweet: The abrogation of Article 370 hasn’t just made accession null & void but also reduces India to an occupation force in Jammu and Kashmir.

Tweet: The forest was shrinking, but the trees kept voting for the axe because its handle was made of wood and they thought it was one of them.

Tweet: Once again, GOI has pushed Kashmiris to the brink. There is no other way but to oppose this illegal & unconstitutional onslaught on our dignity. Attaching an audio clip to this tweet since this is the only way to communicate.

Tweet: What did J&K get for acceding to India? Another partition along communal lines? Our special status isn’t a gift bestowed upon us. Its a right guaranteed by the same 🇮🇳 parliament. A contract entered into by J&K leadership & India. Today the very same contract has been violated.

Tweet: The way some sections of media & civil society are celebrating these developments with glee is disgusting & disconcerting.

Tweet: GOIs intention is clear & sinister. They want to change demography of the only muslim majority state in India, disempower Muslims to the extent where they become second class citizens in their own state.

Tweet: Already under house arrest & not allowed to have visitors either. Not sure how long I’ll be able to communicate. Is this the India we acceded to?

Tweet: People like us who placed faith in Parliament, the temple of democracy have been deceived. Those elements in J&K who rejected the 🇮🇳 constitution & sought resolution under the UN have been vindicated. This will exacerbate the alienation Kashmiris feel.

Tweet: It will have catastrophic consequences for the subcontinent. GOIs intentions are clear. They want the territory of J&K by terrorising it’s people. India has failed Kashmir in keeping its promises.

Tweet: Today marks the darkest day in Indian democracy. Decision of J&K leadership to reject 2 nation theory in 1947 & align with India has backfired. Unilateral decision of GOI to scrap Article 370 is illegal & unconstitutional which will make India an occupational force in J&K.

Tweets from Omar Abdullah (starting from latest)

Tweet: I’m especially concerned about the people living in the Pir Panchal & Chenab Valley regions. These areas have been very susceptible to attempts at communal violence. I hope the Govt has taken adequate precautions to ensure no communal trouble breaks out.

Tweet: Violence will only play in to the hands of those who do not have the best interests of the state in mind. This wasn’t the India J&K acceded to but I’m not quite ready to give up hope yet. Let calm heads prevail. God be with you all.
