Narendra Modi gets ready to take oath as the 15th Prime Minister of India, likely with some changes in his cabinet
With Modi wave riding high across India, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set to return to power. As per the latest updates, BJP has claimed victory at 299 seats while Indian National Congress (INC) has claimed only 52 seats.
Going by the current trends, BJP has performed better than the 2014 General Elections when it won 282 seats on its own in the 543-member Lok Sabha.
The results have also impacted the stock market as Benchmark BSE Sensex touched 40,000 for the first time and NSE Nifty breached the 12,000 level. In addition, the Rupee also appreciated 14 paise to 69.93 against the United States (U.S.) dollar.
Narendra Modi expressed his gratitude with a tweet, “Together we grow. Together we prosper. Together we will build a strong and inclusive India. India wins yet again! #VijayiBharat”
The results are a proof of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity and his campaign, which focussed around national security and fighting terrorism. Under the leadership of Narendra Modi, Indian Air Force (IAF) carried out the Balakot surgical strike destroying the camp of terror group Jaish-E-Mohammad (JeM) in Pakistan. The surgical strike was India’s answer to the killing of more than 40 Central Reserve Police Forces (CRPF) personnel in India in February 2019. For the records, Pakistan has always allowed terror groups to operate and from its country.
In the State of Uttar Pradesh, where the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had formed a Mahagatbandhan, the BJP is leading in 56 of the 80 seats at stake. The SP is ahead in 8 seats and BSP in 12. The INC is leading only at 1 seat. The INC President – Rahul Gandhi is trailing behind BJP’s Smriti Irani.
Speaking on the occasion, BJP Spokesman – Amit Malviya said, “The people on the ground are not buying the narrative of the opposition that people are under threat. People are doing well that they are looking forward to the next government of Narendra Modi. We have to realise that Modi’s government inherited very weak economy and he done very phenomenal job (in the last five year).”
In Odisha, the BJP is ahead in 9 of the 21 seats and Biju Janata Dal is ahead in 11. With counting confirming Modi’s return, the BJP’s office started marking the celebrations by playing colours and distributing sweets.
The Election Commission (EC) has said that the final results are expected only by late evening.
