Modi to take oath soon, changes expected in his new Cabinet

Narendra Modi gets ready to take oath as the 15th Prime Minister of India, likely with some changes in his cabinet

After registering a historic win in the General Elections 2019, the Prime Minister of India – Narendra Modi is may soon take the oath to serve his 2nd term.

The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has not yet officially declared the date of swearing-in ceremony, but speculations are that Modi may be sworn-in on Sunday, May 26, 2019. There are also reports that he may sworn-in on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 or Thursday, May 30, 2019.

Modi will take the oath as 15th Prime Minister of India. The Union Cabinet held a meeting yesterday, i.e., Friday, May 23, 2019 to decide upon the dissolution of the 16th Lok Sabha. After the Cabinet’s recommendation is passed in the form of a resolution, the President of India – Ram Nath Kovind will dissolve the present Lok Sabha.

The 17th Lok Sabha has to be constituted before June 3, 2019 as the current Lok Sabha’s term is ending on June 3, 2019. The process to form a new House will be initiated when the 3 Election Commissioners will meet the President to hand over the list of newly elected members.

However, in the new Government, there could be a major shuffle in his Cabinet of Ministers. The Finance Minister of India – Arun Jaitley may opt out of his existing portfolio due to health reasons. In case he decides not to continue another term, the Minister of Railways – Piyush Goyal may step into his shoes. Piyush Goyal had earlier served as Interim Finance Minister of India when Jaitley was undergoing treatment.

Besides, the Minister of External Affairs – Sushma Swaraj had earlier announced that she may not continue for a second term. The Defence Minister – Nirmala Sitharaman may replace her in Modi’s new Cabinet of Ministers.
There are speculations that President of BJP – Amit Shah may join the Cabinet as Home Minister. The new Defence Minister of India could be Rajnath Singh.

After defeating the President of Indian National Congress (INC) – Rahul Gandhi by a huge margin at Amethi, the Minister of Textiles – Smriti Irani is likely to get more responsibilities in the Cabinet. The Law Minister – Ravi Shankar Prasad have been given a more prominent role after capturing Patna in the polls.

The Minister of Minority Affairs – Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi may also get a Cabinet tag as he one of the most prominent Muslim face in BJP.
