Xi inspects Beijing neighbourhood with Coronavirus casualties surpassing SARS

The President of People’s Republic of China – Xi Jinping inspected a neighbourhood in Beijing to inspect the effectiveness of measures taken by the authorities to contain Coronavirus

The President of People’s Republic of China – Xi Jinping inspected a neighbourhood in Beijing today, i.e., Monday, February 10, 2020 to inspect the effectiveness of measures taken by the authorities to contain Coronavirus.

Wearing a surgical mask, he spoke to a group of residents and asked them about the supply of daily items and public health measures.

Besides, the National Health Commission (NHC) of China has said that the country recorded its most fatal day on Sunday, i.e., February 10, 2020 with 97 causalities in a single day. Of this, 91 casualties were reported from Hubei Province of China where the disease first broke out in December 2019.

Addressing the nation on a national television, Xi thanked all the medical workers who are working day and night to cure patients and also offered his condolences to the family of the deceased persons.

Speaking on the occasion, Xi said, “If Wuhan wins, Hubei province wins; if Hubei wins, the whole country will win.”

The number of casualties arising out of Coronavirus has now surpassed the tally of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The number of casualties caused by Coronavirus now stand at 910, while the total casualties caused by SARS in 2002-2003 was 813. Besides, NHC recorded 3,062 new cases of the Coronavirus on Sunday. The total number of infected people stand at 40,171.

The Deputy Director of the Foreign Ministry Information Department of China – Geng Shuang has said that, as of today, 27 foreigners in China were infected with the coronavirus. Of this, 2 have died and 3 have been discharged. The remaining are getting treatment.

Subsequently, with Chinese Lunar New Year Holiday ending and people getting back to their work, there was a drop of 50% in subway passengers as compared to the normal working days. State newspaper – Beijing Daily and Chinese search engine – Sogou have jointly launched a self-test app that uses artificial intelligence to help people determine their risk of coronavirus infection. The tool was developed based on a questionnaire published by the NHC. Users answer questions about factors such as fever and history of exposure to the virus.

Further, in the wake of Coronavirus, the Mainland Affairs Council of Taiwan, has imposed travel restrictions on people travelling to Taiwan from Hong Kong and Macau. There are 10,840 students from Hong Kong and Macau studying in Taiwan, of whom about 7,900 have left the island for the Lunar New Year holiday.

Making the announcement, the Vice Chairman of Mainland Affairs Council of Taiwan – Chen Ming-chi said, “Except for those who must come to Taiwan to honour their business contracts, transnational personnel transfers and spouses and minors of Taiwanese who have obtained residential status in Taiwan, all others from Hong Kong and Macau will be temporarily stopped from travelling to Taiwan.”

Li Ka Shing Foundation, the charitable foundation of Hong Kong’s tycoon – Li Ka Shing has donated U.S. $ 13 million to Wuhan for fighting against Coronavirus. The World Health Organisation (WHO) team of experts has also left for China to help solve the outbreak.
