Twitter’s new CEO announces plans for Twitter 2.0

Linda Yaccarino plans to make Twitter the world’s most accurate real-time information source

The new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Twitter – Linda Yaccarino, has announced her plans for “Twitter 2.0.”, which will make Twitter the world’s most accurate real-time information source.

Since Elon Musk bought Twitter for U.S. $ 44 billion (£ 35.1 billion) in 2022, it has faced criticism over its approach to disinformation.

In May 2023, Twitter pulled out of the European Union’s (E.U.’s) voluntary code of practice against disinformation. However, the Commissioner for Internal Market of the E.U. – Thierry Breton, said the platform could still be subject to E.U. rules.

In a series of tweets, Yaccarino tweeted,

She further tweeted,

She echoed Musk’s goal that Twitter needs transformation to drive civilization forward through the unfiltered exchange of information and open dialogue about the things that matter most.

Previously, Musk had fired 80% of Twitter’s staff, rolled back content moderation and introduced a controversial revamp of Twitter’s “verified status” feature from one reserved for public figures and media to a pay-to-play option open to any user willing to pay U.S. $ 8 a month for the blue tick. However, his moves to reinstate right-wing accounts, whose views he has shared, and loosen moderation have driven away advertisers. In December 2022, revenue reportedly fell by 40% compared to a year earlier. For advertisers to return, they need to know what to expect regarding user content and engagement.

Yaccarino did not specify in her tweets how she plans to address Twitter’s most urgent problems but said users could build something together to change the world.

For the records, Yaccarino is credited with helping to steer media giant NBC Universal, American multinational mass media and entertainment conglomerate corporation, through upheaval in the industry caused by changing technology. In her previous role, she overhauled the company’s advertising sales business and played a major role in the 2020 launch of its advert-supported streaming platform – Peacock.

In her new role, she will oversee business operations at Twitter, which has been struggling to make money and Musk will continue as Executive Chairman and Chief Technology Officer (CTO).
