Russian launches Kinzhal hypersonic missile to destroy arms depot in Ukraine

Kinzhal hypersonic missile can travel at a speed of Mach 5, which was launched by Russia to destroy an arms depot in Deliatyn

The Russian Defense Ministry has admitted launching nuclear-capable hypersonic aero-ballistic air-to-ground missile – Kinzhal, which destroyed an arms depot in Deliatyn, a village in South-Western Ukraine and100 kms. from Romania border.

The missile can travel at more than five times the speed of sound or Mach 5. It can hit a target up to 2,000 kms. (1,240 miles) away and can fly faster than 6,000 km/h.

Posting a video of destruction, the Russian Defense Ministry tweeted, “Destruction of a weapons depot of the Armed Forces of Ukraine by high-precision missile weapons strike. We can see the exact hit of an underground hangar with weapons and ammunition.”

However, the United States (U.S.) refutes the claim that it is the first missile Russia has fired into Ukraine. As per U.S., Russia has launched more than 1,080 missiles since 24 February, 2022.

The President of Ukraine – Volodymyr Zelenskyy said what Russia did to Mariupol is an “act of terror” that will be “remembered for centuries.” He said in a video message Mariupol will go down in history as an example of war crimes. Mariupol city officials have said that several thousand residents have been forcibly taken by Russian forces to Russian cities over the past week. Mariupol continues to be under intense bombing with locals being trapped without electricity, gas and water.

Besides, Australia has imposed an immediate ban on exports of alumina and aluminium ores, including bauxite, to Russia, as part of its sanctions against Moscow. Australia will also donate atleast 70,000 tonnes of thermal coal to Ukraine to meet its energy needs.

The Foreign Minister of Russia – Sergey Lavrov said he hopes the military operation in Ukraine will end with a “comprehensive agreement” on security issues and Ukraine will agree to neutral status.

Lavrov said Moscow is “ready” to look for guarantees of security and “to coordinate them for Ukraine, for the Europeans and, of course, for ourselves beyond the expansion of the North-Atlantic treaty.” Lavrov also said that cooperation with China will get stronger in the face of western sanctions because at a time when the west is blatantly undermining all the foundations on which the international system is based, Russia and China need to think how to carry on in this world.
