Peace and harmony are central to our ethos: PM Modi

Narendra Modi has urged the people of India to maintain peace and brotherhood and not to indulge in violence

Amidst the rising violence in the North East Delhi, the Prime Minister of India – Narendra Modi has urged the people of India to maintain peace and brotherhood and not to indulge in violence.

Appealing to the nation to maintain peace, the Prime Minister of India – Narendra Modi tweeted, “Peace and harmony are central to our ethos. I appeal to my sisters and brothers of Delhi to maintain peace and brotherhood at all times. It is important that there is calm and normalcy is restored at the earliest.”

He further tweeted, “Had an extensive review on the situation prevailing in various parts of Delhi. Police and other agencies are working on the ground to ensure peace and normalcy.”

Seven more casualties have been reported today, i.e., Thursday, February 27, 2020, taking the total death count to 34, arising out of the violence that erupted in North East Delhi. Of these, 5 have been reported from Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, 1 from Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital and 1 from Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital. The violent clashes have also left more than 200 people injured.

Besides, there has been a lot of controversy after the President of India – Ram Nath Kovind ordered the transfer of the Delhi High Court Judge – Justice S. Muralidhar, who heard the petitions on Delhi violence on Wednesday, February, 26, 2020.

The move gains significance as Justice Muralidhar had come down heavily on Delhi Police on Wednesday, for not taking adequate measures to curtail violence in the city.

The judge has been transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The President’s order came following the recommendation of Supreme Court. The Supreme Court had recommended the transfer last week, following which Delhi High Court launched a protest against the move. The Supreme Court collegium had recommended the transfer of 3 judges on February 12, 2020. But the notifications for these transfers were issued late last night.

Expressing shock over the midnight transfer, the General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee – Priyanka Gandhi tweeted, “The midnight transfer of Justice Muralidhar isn’t shocking given the current dispensation, but it is certainly sad & shameful. Millions of Indians have faith in a resilient & upright judiciary, the government’s attempts to muzzle justice & break their faith are deplorable.”

The Former President of Indian National Congress (INC) – Rahul Gandhi also tweeted, “Remembering the brave Judge Loya, who wasn’t transferred.” He was referring to the death of Justice B.H. Loya in 2014 who was hearing the fake encounter killing case of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, in which the present Home Minister of India – Amit Shah was the main accused.

Amid the rising controversy over the transfer, the Minister of Law & Justice – Ravi Shankar prasad tweeted, “Transfer of Hon’ble Justice Muralidhar was done pursuant to the recommendation dated 12.02.2020 of the Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice of India. While transferring the judge consent of the judge is taken. The well settled process have been followed.”

Accusing Rahul Gandhi on falsely accusing Amit Shah, Ravi Shankar tweeted, “The Loya judgement has been well settled by the Supreme Court. Those raising questions do not respect the judgment of the Apex Court pronounced after elaborate arguments. Does Rahul Gandhi consider himself above even the Supreme Court?”

During the proceedings, Justice Muralidhar observed that Delhi Police was a mere spectator in the whole fiasco and that Delhi cannot afford to witness another 1984-like situation of anti-Sikh riot, where thousands of people were killed.

Justice Muralidhar said, “Why are you not showing alacrity when it comes to registration of FIR in these cases? We want peace to prevail. We do not want the city to witness another 1984 riots. This city has seen enough violence and anguish. Let it not repeat 1984.”

The bench said that when the police can register 11 FIRs in connection with incidents of violence, why did it not show alacrity when it came to the alleged hate speeches by 3 members of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) Kapil Mishra, Anurag Thakur and Parvesh Verma.

In a separate move, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Councillor – Tahir Hussain has denied involvement in the killing of an Intelligence Bureau (IB) Staffer – Ankit Sharma, whose family has accused him of murdering the IB Staffer. Ankit Sharma had gone missing on Tuesday and his body was found in a drain near his home in Chand Bagh area on Wednesday.

Speaking on the allegations, Tahir said, “I came to know from news reports that I am being blamed for the murder of a man. These are lies and baseless accusations.” The comments were made by him in a video that was shared by the Social Media Head of AAP – Ankit Lal.

At the same time, the senior AAP leader – Sanjay Singh has clarified that strictest punishment must be taken against anyone associated with spreading violence.
