India reports 2 new cases of COVID-19, number of cases outside China on the rise

Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India has reported of 2 new cases of COVID-19

According to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, 2 new cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19) have been report today, i.e., Monday, March 2, 2020, with one in Delhi and one in Telangana.

A media statement from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stated that the person from Delhi had travelled to Italy and the other person had travelled to Dubai. However, as of now, both the patients are stable and are being closely monitored.

The official twitter handle of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare tweeted, “Update on #COVID19: Two positive cases of #nCoV19 detected. More details in the Press Release.#coronoavirusoutbreak #CoronaVirusUpdate.”

Prior to this, India reported 3 cases of COVID-19 in Kerala. All of them were students who had returned form Wuhan, the epicentre of the breakout. They have recovered now. The total number of cases in India has reached 5.

Globally, 3,048 people have died and more than 89,216 have been infected. Of this, 2,912 deaths have been in China followed by 54 deaths in Islamic Republic of Iran and 34 deaths in Italy.

The National Health Commission of China has reported 202 new cases today. This is the lowest number of cases reported in a day, since January 22, 2020. As of Sunday, i.e., March 1, 2020, a total of 44,462 patients have recovered from the illness.

Separately, there has been a surge in the number of reported cases outside China. South Korea reported 599 cases today, taking the total tally of deaths to 26 and infected patients to 4,335. Australia has also confirmed 2 new cases today, taking the total tally to 30. A traveller coming from Iran to meet his sister was diagnosed positive for COVID-19. A heath worker who has not travelled overseas has also caught COVID-19.

An Expediency Council Member – Mohammad Mirmohammadi that advises the Supreme Leader of Iran – Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has also died. There have been 2 new cases of OVID-19 in Indonesia.

Besides, the United States (U.S.) has also conformed 2 deaths since Saturday. More than 70 people have been infected with COVID-19. The Ministry of National Defence, Taiwan has postponed the first part of its Han Kuang exercises, the island’s most important annual war games, due to the outbreak. A group of 11 Taiwanese tourists in Israel is being repatriated after a female passenger on their February 28, 2020, Turkish Airlines flight tested positive for the virus.

Talking about other parts of the world, Iraq reported 6 new cases on Sunday, taking the total tally to 19. France has confirmed the number of cases to 130. The Dominican Republic also reported its 1st case.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Sunday said that the virus appeared to particularly hit those over the age of 60 and people who were already weakened by other illness. According to a WHO Situation Report, the symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, dry cough, and shortness of breath.

Sharing the report, WHO tweeted, “The most commonly reported #COVID19 symptoms incl. fever, dry cough, and shortness of breath. Most patients (80%) experienced mild illness. Approximately 14% experienced severe disease & 5% were critically ill. WHO Situation Report 1 March http://bit.ly/39hGebC #coronavirus.”

WHO further tweeted, “WHO is working closely with clinicians caring for patients with #COVID19, in China & across the globe & experts on infectious disease to better understand the clinical presentation, natural history & most effective treatment interventions for COVID-19 #coronavirus.”

It is to be noted that number of deaths arising out of COVID-19 is more than 3 times of the deaths caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The SARS had killed 813 people and COVID-19 has till now killed 2,912 people.
