Rahul Gandhi has resigned from the post of INC President
Ending the months of speculation, Rahul Gandhi has finally confirmed that he is no longer the President of Indian National Congress (INC).
Rahul Gandhi has also said that Congress Working Committee (CWC) will meet soon to immediately decide upon the new President of the INC.
Speaking on the occasion, Rahul Gandhi said, “I am no longer the Congress president. I have already resigned. The CWC should convene a meeting immediately and decide on the new Congress president.”
Gandhi’s resignation follows the dismal performance of INC in the recently held Lok Sabha election where BJP registered a mammoth victory wherein the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returned to power with a huge haul of 353 seats. The INC could manage only 52 seats.
Expressing gratitude, he tweeted, “It is an honour for me to serve the Congress Party, whose values and ideals have served as the lifeblood of our beautiful nation. I owe the country and my organisation a debt of tremendous gratitude and love. Jai Hind.”
He wrote a 4-page emotional letter, which read, “Rebuilding the party requires hard decisions and numerous people have to be made accountable for the failure of 2019. It would be unjust to hold others accountable but ignore my own responsibility as president of the party.”
The letter further stated, “Ours is a party with a profound history and heritage, one of struggle and dignity that I deeply respect. It is woven into the fabric of India and I trust the party will make the best decision regarding who can lead us with courage, love and fidelity.”
Describing himself as a devoted son of India and a loyal worker of INC, we wrote in the letter, “At times, I stood completely alone and am extremely proud of it.”
He even mentioned that democracy is in real danger and has been fundamentally weakened.
Criticizing the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), he stated, “We didn’t fight a political party in the 2019 election. Rather, we fought the entire machinery of the Indian state, every institution of which was marshalled against the opposition. It is crystal clear that our once cherished institutional neutrality no longer exists in India.”
He took the moral responsibility of the debacle and resigned on May 25, 2019. However, the CWC rejected his resignation and authorised him to make the necessary changes and revamp the Party at all levels.
Congress leaders at various levels have been appealing to Gandhi to take back his resignation but he has been unrelenting. Some members even staged ‘dharna’ outside the party headquarters. The Chief Ministers of INC ruled States have also had met and urged Rahul Gandhi to not to resign from his said position. But Rahul Gandhi has been pretty firm on resigning.
The CWC is likely to meet soon to decide upon the future leadership of the INC. There are speculations that senior most INC leader, Motilal Vora will serve as Interim President of the Congress. For the records, as a practice, in the absence of Party President, the senior most leader of INC works as Interim president of the party, until a new President is formally appointed.
