Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri would like to remain Prime Minister, at least for some more time. In a dramatic turn of events, after meeting with president President Michel Aoun’s in Beirut, Hariri told waiting reporters that he will not resign as of now. He further said that he will take final call after further consultations.
Earlier on November 4 while on an official business in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, the Lebanese PM had resigned on air saying his life was otherwise in danger. Lebanon had rejected the resignation until he returned to the country.
Sectarian divide runs deep in Lebanon between Shias and Sunnis. As a peace arrangement PM of Lebanon is from Sunni minority with President represent Shia interests. Lately the two interests are getting increasingly linked with Iranian and Saudi national interests.
Hariri’s abrupt resignation from Saudi capital had upset the status quo, but instead expected divisions it created a wave of nationalism inside Lebanon.
The move was seen as an attempt by Saudi Arabia to counter the increasing Iranian influence inside Arabian peninsula. If true this could mean another victory for Tehran, which was already basking in glory of Iraq, Syria and Yemen successes
