The Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations have gathered in the Canadian Rockies, with the escalating Israel-Iran conflict looming large over a Summit already fraught with geopolitical and economic challenges.

The 2-day 51st G7 Summit, will be held on on 16th – 17th June’25 at the Alpine resort of Kananaskis, 90 kilometers west of Calgary. It marks Canada’s first time hosting since the tense 2018 G7 in Charlevoix, when the then President of the United States (U.S.) – Donald Trump abruptly withdrew U.S. support for the final communiqué and criticized then-Prime Minister of Canada – Justin Trudeau.

The present Prime Minister of Canada – Mark Carney has said that his priorities are strengthening peace and security, building critical mineral supply chains and creating jobs. However, issues such as the tariffs announced by the United Sates (U.S.) and the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine will also be the key highlights of the Summit. Trump, who has often mused about annexing Canada, has imposed tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. Carney has threatened reprisals if Washington does not lift its import tariffs.

Taking it to X, Carney posted,

To reduce friction and keep U.S. engaged, Canada has scrapped plans for a comprehensive joint communiqué and would issue chair summaries instead. Just hours before the Summit opening, Israel and Iran exchanged fresh airstrikes, killing dozens and heightening fears of a broader regional war. A Senior G7 Official confirmed that leaders intend to issue a joint statement calling for de-escalation in the Middle East.

The Chancellor of Germany – Friedrich Merz emphasized that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and affirming Israel’s right to self-defense are among his key objectives.

The Summit also features leaders from invited nations including Ukraine, India, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, South Africa, Brazil, and Australia. Many are expected to seek bilateral time with Trump to discuss pressing trade and security concerns. The Prime Minister of Japan – Shigeru Ishiba hopes to persuade Trump to drop trade tariffs that have imperiled Japan’s auto companies, following a 6th round of high-level trade talks in Washington. The President of Ukraine – Volodymyr Zelenskiy is hoping for a calm and constructive encounter with Trump after a fractious White House meeting earlier this year. Trump came to power for the second time this year, promising to end the war with Russia within 24 hours, but diplomatic efforts have stalled.

This is Trump’s first international Summit during his second term where he would focus on covering trade, global economy, critical minerals, migrant and drug smuggling, wildfires, international security, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and energy security.
