France records a new daily high of 104,611 COVID-19 cases

This is the highest number of Covid-19 cases France has reported ever since the pandemic began

In a major crisis, France has reported a record high of 104,611 Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in a single day, breaking its previous record high of 100,000 cases.

This is the highest number of cases it has reported ever since the pandemic began. The Health Minister of France – Olivier Veran had earlier warned that Omicron strain will become more dominant in France during the period from Christmas to New Year.

The President of France – Emmanuel Macron is set to hold a meeting with key members of his Government on Monday, i.e., December 27, 2021, where he will take stock of the situation. Macron will also discuss safety measures for containing the spread of Omicron variant.

The healthcare authority of France has already recommended that all adults must receive the COVID-19 booster jab, 3 months from their first dose of vaccine. Previously, people could take the booster jab after 5 months of first dose but due to the rapid spread of Omicron.

The Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS), independent public authority of a scientific nature which develops quality in the health, social and medico-social fields, has recommended that booster jab should be made available to teenagers also, who are at risk. This comes days after France opened vaccination for children aged 5 years of age and more than that.

Taking it to twitter, HAS tweeted (translated to English), “#Communiqué | #COVID19: two recommendations to counter Omicron and its consequences:
• Administer the booster dose from 3 months after primary vaccination
• Now offer a booster dose to fragile adolescents aged 12 to 17.”

Besides, the Government has also said that the health pass will be issued to only those who take the booster jab. The COVID-19 pass is required to for access to cafés, restaurants and public spaces, as well as for international travel. The main aim of a vaccination pass will be to do away with the option of obtaining a valid certificate by testing negative instead of having the vaccine shots. As of now, 76.5% of French population is fully vaccinated.

Some regions have already enacted their own safety measures. Savoie, a department in the Southeast of France, has reintroduced the compulsory wearing of masks, not just in indoor public spaces, but outdoors too.
