The United Kingdom gets Boris Johnson as its new Prime Minister from the Conservatives

The 55 years old Boris Johnson has been elected as the new leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party and the Prime Minister of United Kingdom (U.K.), defeating his rival Jeremy Hunt by a huge margin.

Boris Johnson won 92, 153 votes as against Jeremy Hunt who got 46,656 votes in a ballot of party members. Out of 1,60,000 Conservative and Unionist Party members, the turnout for the poll was 87.4%. He would be sworn in as the new Prime Minister of U.K. on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 after Theresa May steps down as the Prime Minster of U.K.

In his victory speech, Boris said he would “deliver Brexit, unite the country and defeat Jeremy Corbyn.”

Speaking from Queen Elizabeth II Centre in London, Boris Johnson said, “We are going to energise the country. We are going to get Brexit done on 31 October and take advantage of all the opportunities it will bring with a new spirit of can do.”

He further added, “We are once again going to believe in ourselves, and like some slumbering giant we are going to rise and ping off the guy ropes of self-doubt and negativity.”

The search for new Prime Minster began after Theresa May failed to win the support of her Cabinet on the Brexit deal. The former Mayor of London has been stressing on U.K. leaving the European Union (EU) without a deal, throughout his election campaign.

Thanking his Party members, Johnson tweeted, “Thank you all for the incredible honour you have done me. The time for campaigning is over and the time for work begins to unite our country and party, deliver Brexit and defeat Corbyn. I will work flat out to repay your confidence.”

Messages from U.K.
Accepting his defeat, Jeremy Hunt said, “Congratulations @BorisJohnson 4 a campaign well fought. You ‘ll be a great PM for our country at this critical moment! Throughout campaign you showed optimism, energy & unbounded confidence in our wonderful country & we need that. All best wishes from the entrepreneur :-)”

Boris Johnson has worked as Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of U.K., under the leadership of Theresa may, until he resigned from the office over the Brexit issue. Thanking Theresa May, he said that it was a privilege working with May.

Congratulating Johnson, Theresa May tweeted, “Many congratulations to @BorisJohnson on being elected leader of @Conservatives – we now need to work together to deliver a Brexit that works for the whole UK and to keep Jeremy Corbyn out of government. You will have my full support from the back benches.”

The Leader of the Labour Party – Jeremy Corbyn said that Boris Johnson may have won the support of Conservative and Unionist party but has not won the support of the entire U.K.

Taking to twitter, Jeremy Corbyn said, “Boris Johnson has won the support of fewer than 100,000 unrepresentative Conservative Party members by promising tax cuts for the richest, presenting himself as the bankers’ friend, and pushing for a damaging No Deal Brexit.
