The 360 square kms. (140 square miles) Yavoriv military facility, less than 25 kms. (15 miles) from the Polish border, is one of Ukraine’s biggest and the largest in the Western Ukraine. Ukraine holds most of its drills with NATO countries there. Foreign military instructors also worked at the base.
Meanwhile, the President of Ukraine – Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned Russian forces that they will face a fight to the death if they try to occupy Kyiv.
Zelensky said, “If they decide to carpet bomb and simply erase the history of this region… and destroy all of us, then they will enter Kyiv. If that’s their goal, let them come in, but they will have to live on this land by themselves.”
Civilian fighters and residents Kyiv are preparing to defend their country as Russian forces surround the city with troops and artillery just kilometres away. Blasts were heard in and around Kyiv.
The Ukrainian forces almost destroyed a Russian battalion near Mariupol, despite the city being under heavy Russian bombardment. Russia has already captured the areas on the Eastern outskirts of the city. Ukraine said Russian forces shelled a mosque in the city, where nearly 80 civilians were reportedly hiding, most of them Turkish citizens.
The Eastern Ukrainian town of Volnovakha has been destroyed but the city remains under Ukrainian control and is fighting to prevent a Russian encirclement. Russian forces used Tochka-U short-range ballistic missiles for the attack. The city is strategically significant since it is on the front line with the separatist areas in Donetsk.
Russia has also said it will target Western arms shipments to Ukraine, raising fears of a potential clash between Russian forces and the NATO member-states. The Secretary-General of NATO – Jens Stoltenberg has said Russia might use chemical weapons following its invasion of Ukraine and that such a move would be a war crime.
United Kingdom (U.K.) has launched a new scheme called “Homes for Ukraine” where Britons providing spare room or property to Ukrainian refugees for a period of 6 months, will get £ 350 a month. Britons don’t need to know the refugees in advance. They can also find them through posts on social media. As of now, there is no limit on the number of refugees who can come to the U.K. for shelter. The Ukrainian refugees will be given 3 years leave to remain in U.K., with the right to work and access all public services.
