Ukraine ready to negotiate, Russia ready for peace: Trump

US President Trump received a letter from Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy, wanting to negotiate peace with Russia and sign a minerals deal with USA

The President of the United States (U.S.) – Donald Trump, has said that he has received a letter from the President of Ukraine – Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressing Ukraine’s readiness to negotiate an end to the ongoing war with Russia.

The announcement marks a significant geopolitical shift, as Trump also disclosed that he has been engaged in serious discussions with Russia and has received strong signals that they are ready for peace.

Addressing the Congress, Trump said, “Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody wants peace more than the Ukrainians.”

He further said, “Wouldn’t that be beautiful?” he said. “It’s time to stop this madness. It’s time to halt the killing. It’s time to end this senseless war. If you want to end wars, you have to talk to both sides.”

Despite the bold statements, Trump did not provide further details on how he plans to end the largest conflict in Europe since World War II. His speech was anticipated to outline his strategy for Ukraine and Russia, but specifics remained elusive.

Additionally, Trump revealed that Ukraine was prepared to sign Minerals deal with the U.S., a development the U.S. considers crucial for continued American support of Ukraine’s defense. The Trump Administration and Ukraine are planning to finalize the agreement in exchange for military aid, which Trump had recently paused. However, conflicting reports emerged when U.S. Treasury Secretary – Scott Bessent, said “there is no signing planned,” raising uncertainty over the deal’s fate.

Earlier, Zelenskyy vowed to repair relations with the U.S. following what he described as a “regrettable” clash with Trump in the Oval Office last week. He reaffirmed his commitment to the minerals deal, stating he was ready to sign it “any time and in any convenient format.” Zelenskyy’s comments came just a day after Trump announced halting military aid to Ukraine, a move that has disrupted U.S. foreign policy and signaled a more conciliatory approach toward Russia.

Taking it to X, Zelenskyy tweeted,

The statement made no mention of the pause in U.S. military supplies. Zelenskyy’s statement aimed at stressing Kyiv’s gratitude following the explosive confrontation at the White House, at which Trump and Vice President of the U.S. – JD Vance scolded Zelenskyy, as insufficiently appreciative. As part of a potential peace framework, Zelenskyy proposed initial steps such as a prisoner exchange and a cessation of air and sea attacks, contingent on Russia’s reciprocal actions.

Besides, Russia welcomed the suspension of U.S. military aid as a positive step toward peace, though it awaited official confirmation of Trump’s decision. The move has sparked concerns among U.S. lawmakers, particularly Democrats, who have accused Trump of orchestrating a historic shift in American foreign policy by weakening support for Ukraine while adopting a friendlier posture toward Russia.

The halt in U.S. military assistance places additional strain on European allies, who have continued to back Ukraine despite recent tensions with Washington. Britain and France, both of which engaged in diplomatic talks at the White House last week, have pledged military support for a potential ceasefire. In response, Germany’s major political parties proposed a € 500 billion (U.S. $ 531 billion) defense fund to bolster European security efforts.

Meanwhile, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, unveiled a proposal to mobilize up to € 800 billion for European Union (E.U.)-wide defense initiatives. The 27-nation bloc is set to convene an emergency summit on Thursday, 6th March’25.
