U.K. and Germany to jointly develop next-generation “deep precision strike” weapon

The announcement reflects a broader strategic pivot by Europe’s leading economies to strengthen defense capabilities amid rising global tensions

In a significant step toward deepening European defense cooperation, the United Kingdom (U.K.) and Germany have announced a joint initiative to develop a next generation “deep precision strike” weapon with a range exceeding 2,000 kilometers.

The announcement reflects a broader strategic pivot by Europe’s leading economies to strengthen defense capabilities amid rising global tensions. The initiative follows a bilateral defense pact signed last year, where both nations committed to collaborative weapons development and underscored Europe’s growing responsibility for its own security, particularly in light of ongoing hostilities in Ukraine.

Last year, the U.K. and Germany signed a landmark defence agreement and pledged to co-operate on exercises on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation’s (NATO’s) Eastern flank as they stressed the need for Europe to be able to defend itself, given a possible escalation in the war in Ukraine. The pact includes a commitment to develop new weapons that have a greater range and accuracy than current long-range missile systems like Storm Shadow. Under the agreement, Germany will occasionally station planes in Scotland to help protect the North Atlantic Ocean. The countries will collaborate on armed vehicles and land-based drones, as well as working to equip German Sea King helicopters, which it has given to Ukraine, with modern missile systems.

Since that agreement, geopolitical shifts — including the election of Donald Trump as the President of the United States (U.S.) and his reiterated expectation that Europe bolster its own defences — have accelerated efforts across the continent to invest in domestic military capabilities.

The Defense Minister of the U.K. – John Healy and the Federal Minister of Defense of Germany -Boris Pistorius, will announce the new long-range weapon project at a meeting in Berlin.

A Statement from Healy read, “In a more dangerous world, NATO and European allies stand united. This partnership is helping us make defence an engine for growth – creating jobs, boosting skills, and driving investment across the UK and Germany.”

While the statement did not disclose the project’s timeline or budget, it confirmed that the collaboration signals a broader intent to advance joint defence production. In addition to the long-range missile system, the ministers are expected to discuss joint procurement of torpedoes for maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft, and formalise a deal for Germany’s acquisition of British-made military bridges.

Besides, the European Union (E.U.) Member States have already begun boosting their own defences in response to Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. They ramped up defence spending by more than 30% between 2021 and 2024.
