Thousands protest against the Polish Government to oppose Polexit

The Poles took to the streets of Warsaw supporting European Union, after a Polish Court recently challenged the supremacy of E.U

Thousands of Poles took to the streets of the capital city of Warsaw on Sunday, i.e., October 10, 2021, in a show of support to European Union (E.U.), after a Polish Court recently challenged the supremacy of E.U.

Raising slogans like “We are staying!” and “We are Europeans”, more than 100,000 people filled the Castle Square, in Warsaw’s historic centre, to oppose the right-wing nationalist Government. The protest took place across 100 towns and cities.

Ruling out the possibilities of Polexit, Morawiecki posted on Facebook (translated in English), “Polexit is fake news. This is a harmful myth, which the opposition replaces its lack of idea for the appropriate position of Poland in Europe. Such methods are used when you live delusions instead of facts. When you want to deceive yourself and others”.

The protests have been called for by the Former European Council President and now Head of Poland’s largest opposition group Civic Coalition – Donald Tusk, who wants the Poland to stay in the E.U.

Tusk warned that a “pseudo court” had decided to take Poland out of the E.U. by order of the governing party’s leader, in violation of the constitution.

Speaking on the occasion, he said, “We want an independent, law-abiding, democratic and fair Poland.”

The leader of the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) Party – Jaroslaw Kaczynski, has been in conflict with E.U. officials for the past 6 years as PiS has sought greater control over the courts. The PiS leader along with the Prime Minister of Poland – Mateusz Morawiecki have been seeking to stop Polish judges from using E.U. law to question the status of the appointment of new judges. However, the E.U. has said that the changes will be not in line with democratic checks and balances.

In a legal decision requested by Morawiecki, the Constitutional Tribunal declared some articles in E.U. treaties “incompatible” with its national legislation and unconstitutional. Politicians across Europe have voiced dismay at the ruling, which undermined the legal pillar of European integration on which the 27-nation E.U. stands.

The Poland has also accused the E.U. of blackmail following a warning by E.U. Economy Commissioner – Paolo Gentiloni that the court case could have repercussions on the disbursement of Poland’s Resilience and Recovery Fund (RRF). The European Commission is yet to approve € 57 billion (U.S. $ 66 billion) funds under Recovery and Resilience Fund (RRF).

Besides, Poles want to be a part of the E.U. as it brought new freedom to travel and a dramatic economic transformation to the central European nation after communist rule came to an end in 1989.
