Russian attacks Ukraine with 84 cruise missiles

There are concerns that Putin may escalate the attack on Ukraine since he stated that Russia will not refrain from using nuclear weapon

Russia attacked several cities of Ukraine today, Monday, October 10, 2022, with 84 cruise missiles, killing 11 persons and wounding 64 people.

This is one of biggest air strike in Ukraine ever since Russia invaded Ukraine. Of these 84 cruise missiles, 43 were neutralized by missile defense systems. Russia also used 24 drones, of which 13 were destroyed.

The attack comes 2 days after a bridge connecting Russia to Crimean Peninsula was damaged by an explosion. Russia used that bridge to transport military equipment to Ukraine. Although Ukraine has not claimed the responsibility of the attack, Putin believes Ukraine was behind the attack.

Putin has been under pressure for past some time over Ukraine’s recapturing of territories in Donetsk and Kherson.

In a televised speech, Putin said, “It is simply impossible to leave such crimes unanswered. If attempts to carry out terrorist attacks on our territory continue, responses from Russia will be tough and will correspond in scale to the level of threats to the Russian Federation.”

Taking it to twitter, the President of Ukraine – Volodymyr Zelenskyy tweeted,

The President of European Commission – Ursula von der Leyen tweeted,

Ukraine’s defense intelligence agency alleged that Russia had been planning Monday’s missile attacks since early last week, before the blast on the bridge.

Atleast 4 explosions were heard in Ukraine’s capital – Kyiv. Kyiv’s subway system was suspended for hours, with underground stations serving as bunkers. But the air raid alert in the city was lifted at midday, as rescue workers sought to pull people from the rubble caused by the strikes.

In the western city of Lviv, an explosion hit a critical infrastructure facility. Part of the city is without electricity. A third of the traffic lights do not work. In Sumy, in the Northeast of Ukraine, there were power outages across the region after missile attacks. Kharkiv also reported several blasts.

There are concerns that Putin may escalate the attack on Ukraine. He had previously said Russia will not refrain from using nuclear weapons. Prior to attacks, Putin held a meeting with the Security Council.

The G7 Members will hold an emergency meeting tomorrow, i.e., Tuesday, October 11, 2022 via video conference.
