The Defence Expo 2020 is an opportunity for the Indian defence industry to promote its export potential
Demonstrating India’s might as the global defence manufacturing hub, the Prime Minister of India – Narendra Modi, today, i.e., Wednesday, February 5, 2020, inaugurated the Defence Expo 2020 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (U.P.).
The theme of the 11th Edition of the Defence Expo is ‘India: The Emerging Defence Manufacturing Hub’ with a focus on ‘Digital Transformation of Defence’. Covering the complete spectrum of the country’s aerospace, defence and security interests, the Defence Expo is being held from February 5-9, 2020.
Reflecting the Central Government’s focus on ‘Make in India’, the Defence Expo 2020 is an opportunity for the Indian defence industry to showcase its capabilities and promote its export potential.
Delegates from 70 countries and 172 foreign military manufacturers will attend this 5-day mega exhibition. More than 856 Indian defence firms will present their products in the expo.
Inaugurating the expo, Modi said that with an aim to tackle new security challenges, Indian security forces are developing new technologies. The objective is to develop 25 products based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the upcoming 5 years.
Speaking on the occasion, Modi said, “World’s second most populous country, second largest Army and largest democracy can no longer rely only on import.”
He further added, “India is aiming to increase the Defence exports to the tune of USD 5 billion or 35,000 crore within the next 5 years.”

The inauguration was followed by a live demonstration of naval systems, aero systems and land systems. Apart from these, some of the avionics, accessories, assemblies, products such as Indigenous Digital Map Generator (i-DMG), Engine and Flight Display Unit, Gas Turbine Electrical Generator (GTEG) -60, Air Producer Engine, Glass Cockpit for Do-228, Automatic Target Recognition (ATR), Digital Sand Rapid Prototyping Technology, etc., will also be displayed.

Glorious presence of you all will make ‘Mahakumbh’ of defence sector a mega success.
The State Government has been encouraging defence manufacturing in the region. Two Dornier aircraft of aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) will be used by the State Government for civil purposes on two routes. It will be for the first time that the 19-seater aircraft will be used by a State Government for civilian purposes. Besides, to create a U.P. Defence Corridor, nodes will be set up in cities like Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi and Kanpur.
It is to be noted that Defence Expo 2018 was held in Chennai where over 700 exhibitors, including 542 Indian and 160 foreigners participated. A total of 40 Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) were signed in that expo.
