Prime Minister of India – Narendra Modi arrives in Brasilia to participate in BRICS Summit
The Prime Minister of India – Narendra Modi has arrived in Brasilia, the capital city of Brazil, today, i.e., Wednesday, November 13, 2019, to participate in the 11th Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) Summit.
Modi is on a 2 days visit where he will interact with BRICS leaders and focus on strengthening ties with world’s five major economies in areas of digital economy, science and technology. He will also focus on building mechanisms for counter-terrorism cooperation. The theme of the 11th BRICS Summit is ‘Economic growth for an innovative future.’
On reaching Brazil, Modi tweeted, “Reached Brazil to take part in the BRICS Summit. Will also meet various world leaders during this visit. I am sure the BRICS Summit will enhance cultural and economic linkages between BRICS nations.”
BRICS is the acronym coined for an association of 5 major emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Originally the first four were grouped as “BRIC”, before the induction of South Africa in 2010. Since 2009, the BRICS nations have met annually at formal summits.
In 2015, the 5 BRICS countries represented over 3.1 billion people, or about 41% of the world population. As of 2018, BRICS nations have a combined nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of U.S. $.18.6 trillion. The BRICS are forecasted to expand 4.6% in 2016, from an estimated growth of 3.9% in 2015.
Prior to departure, Modi tweeted, “Would be taking part in this year’s BRICS Summit being held in Brazil on 13th and 14th November. The Summit’s theme is ‘Economic growth for an innovative future.’ I look forward to holding discussions with BRICS leaders on greater cooperation in a wide range of areas.”
