Not easy to agree with the U.S. on Ukraine peace deal – Russia

Sergei Lavrov, has acknowledged the difficulties in negotiating a peace agreement with U.S. to end the war in Ukraine, highlighting the complexity of situation

The Foreign Minister of Russia – Sergei Lavrov, has acknowledged the difficulties in negotiating a peace agreement with the United States (U.S.) to end the ongoing war in Ukraine, highlighting the complexity of discussions over key components of a potential settlement.

He emphasized that while Russia is open to a mutually beneficial deal, it remains cautious of agreements that could lead to unfavorable outcomes. He criticized the impact of Western sanctions on global economic integration, stating that such measures have disrupted the globalization of the world economy.

Speaking to media, Lavrov said, “It is not easy to agree the key components of a settlement. They are being discussed. We are well aware of what a mutually beneficial deal looks like, which we have never rejected, and what a deal looks like that could lead us into another trap.”

Lavrov reiterated Russia’s demands, including Ukraine abandoning its aspirations to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and withdrawing troops from territories claimed by Russia. These territories encompass Crimea and parts of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions. Russia currently controls about 20% of Ukraine, though these claims are not widely recognized internationally.

He further said, “We’re talking about the rights of the people who live on these lands. That is why these lands are dear to us. And we cannot give them up, allowing people to be kicked out of there.”

Lavrov praised Trump’s “common sense” and for saying that previous U.S. support of Ukraine’s bid to join the NATO military alliance was a major cause of the war in Ukraine.

He used to play, to have friends, to go to school. But his extraordinary was the fact that he opened the door of his heart to Jesus and he put Jesus at the first place in his life.’

While the President of the U.S. – Donald Trump has expressed a desire to end the conflict and be remembered as a peacemaker, a comprehensive peace deal remains elusive. The Kremlin has indicated that it is too early to expect significant improvements in U.S.-Russia relations.

He also criticised the Former President of the U.S. – Joe Biden, Western European leaders and Ukraine for describing Russia’s 2022 invasion as an imperial-style land grab, and repeatedly vowing to defeat Russian forces.

He said that the President of Russia – Vladimir Putin Russian views the war in Ukraine as part of a broader struggle against the West. He believes that after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Western countries expanded NATO into Eastern Europe, disregarding Russia’s security concerns. Putin argues that this expansion encroached upon areas Russia considers within its sphere of influence, leading to feelings of humiliation and prompting Russia to assert its interests more forcefully.
