The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) today, i.e., Thursday, June 11, 2020 said that that there is no community transmission in India of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
Addressing a Press Conference, the Director General of ICMR – Prof. (Dr.) Balram Bhargava said, “India is such a large country and prevalence is very low. India is not in community transmission.”
He also said that lockdown was successful in containing the spread of the outbreak. The statement came after ICMR informed that 0.73% of population in 83 Districts, where sero-survey was conducted, had evidence of past exposure to COVID-19 infection. However, as per sero-survey, large proportion of population still susceptible to COVID-19.
In other developments, the Chief Minister of Punjab – Captain Amarinder Singh ordered stricter lockdown on weekends and public holidays, with movements restricted only for E-Pass holders. All citizens, except medical staff and essential service providers, would be required to download an E-Pass from the COVA app.
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in Delhi High Court seeking imposition of a strict lockdown in Delhi as cases continue to rise. This comes after the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi – Manish Sisodiya claimed that Delhi will have 5.5 lakh cases by July end 2020.
The Chief Minister of Maharashtra – Uddhav Thackrey said in a Press Conference that if people don’t take the lockdown seriously, the Government will roll-back all the relaxations allowed in the restrictions.
Speaking on the occasion, Uddhav Thackrey said, “The Government is taking cautious steps for ‘Mission Begin Again’. Like we imposed the lockdown in phases, it will have to be lifted in a phased manner. The danger is yet to pass. But, we cannot bring the economic cycle to a grinding halt even as we fight coronavirus.”
Maharashtra continues to be the worst hit State with 94,041 cases and 3438 casualties. It recorded -3,254 fresh cases and 149 casualties today.
Meanwhile, India once gain recorded highest single day spike with 9,996 fresh cases and 357 casualties. Tamil Nadu, the second most affected State reported 1,927 fresh cases and 19 casualties, taking the tally to 36,841 cases and number of casualties to 326 cases. In Delhi, there have been 32,810 cases and 984 casualties. In the past 24 hours, it reported 1,501 fresh cases and 79 casualties.
Uttar Pradesh (U.P.) reported 478 new cases, the biggest single-day spike, taking the number of cases to 12,088 and casualties to 345. Andhra Pradesh reported 135 fresh cases, taking the total number of registered cases in the State to 4,261. Recording 109 fresh cases, total number of cases in Bihar crossed 5,800 mark and there have been 33 casualties. With 235 fresh cases, Assam’s tally surged to 3,285.
As per Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), there are 2,86,51 cases and there have been 8,102 casualties.
