Celebrate Holi by making our own colours and saving the hassle of going out and putting social distancing for a toss
Holi! The Indian spring festival of colours is just around the corner. What better way to celebrate the occasion by making our own colours and saving the hassle of going out and putting social distancing for a toss. This way we make sure that it’s budget and pocket friendly and it’s safe for our skin at the same time. What if we can get all the colours in our kitchen itself. Here are some recipes to create your own herbal Holi colours at home.
Gulal:
Pink- Grind some pieces of boiled and dried beetroot into a fine powder and mix it with arrowroot powder.
Green – For a dry herbal gulal in Green, blanch some spinach and grind in a fine paste and let it dry in the sun. Once it dries, mix it with arrowroot powder.
Yellow- A gulal in golden yellow colour can be made by mixing turmeric powder with gram flour in a 1:2 ratio. Mix turmeric with cornflour for a lighter colour.
Orange – For an orange colour, mix 4tbsp turmeric powder with a little boiling water to make a fine paste and add juice of a lemon. let it dry in the sun. Once it dries, grind it sooth with arrowroot powder.
Blue – To make a dry version of this colour, mix 4tbsp pure indigo powder with a little boiling water to make a fine paste. let it dry in the sun. Once it dries, mix it with arrowroot powder.
Water Colours:
Pink – For bright pink herbal colour, grind beetroot in a fine paste and then mix it with water and strain the pulp.
Green – For a Green water colour, blanch spinach leaves in water and grind into a smooth paste. Mix the paste with water and strain out the pulp if any.
Yellow- To obtain bright yellow colour, mix 4tbsp turmeric powder with a little boiling water to make a fine paste and mix it with water.
Orange – For saffron water colour soak some henna leaves in water overnight, use the water to play Holi the next day.
Blue – Blue water colour can be obtained by mixing crushed blue hibiscus flowers or jacaranda flowers with water.
Red- To make a wet version of this colour, blanch some red hibiscus or tesu flowers in hot water and grind in a fine paste. Mix it with water to get a bright red herbal water colour which gives soothing fragrance as well.
This way we can make this Holi an eco-friendly and chemical-free affair and splash colours on our dear and near ones without worrying about effects of harsh chemicals. So this year lets celebrate Holi in a herbal way !
