About 4 Million people living in Assam have not been included as Citizens in a draft list of citizenship released today. The draft list, called the National Register of Citizens (NRC), was announced by the Registrar General of India (RGI) in the state capital Guwahati.
Out of 3,29,91,385 applicants 2,89,83,677 have been found eligible for inclusion in complete draft of NRC. The NRC draft was released online and in all the NRC Sewa Kendras (NSK) across the state at 10 am, the Rajya Sabha has been adjourned till 12 pm, after TMC MPs caused a stir on the issue.
The list can be checked online or by visiting one of the 2,500 NRC Seva Kendras (service centres) set up across the state. The results can also be accessed via SMS on request.
As a security precaution Section 144 has been imposed and more than 500 companies of central para military forces have been mobilized.
Meanwhile after creating largest stateless population, Rajnath Singh toned down the significance of the exercise calling it only a draft and not the final report.
I want to emphatically say that this is only a draft and not the Final NRC. Everyone will have the opportunity to file Claims / Objections as per provision in the law. Only after the disposal of claims and objections, the Final NRC will be published. pic.twitter.com/7UweZiyvJt
