The Selfies experience has now been banned at Islam’s two holiest sites
Pilgrims planning to take selfies in Mecca and Madina will no longer be able to do it as
Saudi government has prohibited them from taking pictures and videos at the two holy sites, according to Jakarta Post.
The move, as per Saudi government, is aimed at protecting and preserving the holy sites, preventing disturbances of worshippers and ensuring tranquillity while performing acts of worship.
According to a report by Jakarta Post, the ban in Mecca’s Masjid al-Haram, also known as the Great Mosque of Mecca, and Medina’s Masjid an-Nabawi, or The Prophet’s Mosque, has been imposed by the Saudi Arabian government.
In recent years, many pilgrims to both holy sites have posted pictures on Facebook and Instagram during the haj and umrah (minor haj). A study called ‘Me, Myself and My Killfie: Characterizing and Preventing Selfie Deaths’ found that between March 2014 and September 2016, 127 deaths in the 18 month period due to selfie.
